All About Megan Fox’s Engagement Rings
When Megan Fox became engaged to musician Machine Gun Kelly early in 2022, the engagement ring of their choice was an asymmetrical Toi et Moi engagement ring. The designer is British-born, fine-jewelry designer Stephen Webster but you can recreate the look using a VRAI created diamond Toi et Moi ring.
The lore surrounding the ring made headlines as much as the cutting-edge design itself. The two stones are the birthstones of the couple, and the ring itself consists of two bands that snap together thanks to a magnetic clasp. Taking it off is supposed to hurt.
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly: A Toi et Moi Heirloom
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly became engaged on January 11, 2022. The official announcement came from MGK’s own instagram video, where we see Megan showing off her diamond ring, which included an emerald (her birthstone), a diamond (his birthstone) and two magnetic bands of thorns.
“yes, in this life and every life” 💍 beneath the same branches we fell in love under, i brought her back to ask her to marry me. i know tradition is one ring, but i designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love. 1-11-2022,” read the caption.
The ring is a variation of the Toi et Moi design, which usually sees two stones of different shapes on a single band. “It’s a thoroughbred Colombian emerald, with no treatment. It was just carved into the teardrop, straight out of the mine. And the diamond was directly from Stephen [Webster],” Machine Gun Kelly told Vogue that same month. “The concept is that the ring can come apart to make two rings. When it’s together, it’s held in place by a magnet. So you see how it snaps together? And then it forms an obscure heart. And you see this right here? The bands are actually thorns. So if she tries to take it off, it hurts…”
The diamond is not actually a modern Pear shape, as Webster himself described it as an “antique cut” on Nashville Lifestyles. The ring is part of Webster’s Thorn Embrace collection, which plays with Webster’s signature obsession with thorn-like shapes throughout his practice. He chose the shape because it’s “always unisex with an unquestionable edge.” However, the reason Machine Gun Kelly chose this design is because he first saw Webster’s old collection called “The Seven Deadly Sins.”
What Is a Toi et Moi Engagement Ring?
The Toi et Moi engagement ring features a band with two gemstones set side by side. It symbolizes two individuals coming together as one, while still honoring their selfhood. It’s a style that has gained tremendous popularity in the last decade, but actually has historical precedents dating back to two centuries ago. As a style, it offers the freedom of countless combinations: two different gemstones in the same cut and size, two gemstones of the same kind in different cuts, or entirely different materials in terms of composition and size.
Toi et Moi Rings in Jewelry History
The first Toi et Moi ring is thought to be a ring that Napoleon used in 1796 to propose to Josephine de Beauharnais. It comprised one teardrop-shaped diamond and one teardrop-shaped sapphire, set on a gold band. Each gem weighs a little under a carat, and while the two divorced in 1810, the ring remained a symbol of everlasting love. The ring sold in 2013 for $949,000 via French auction house Osenat.
Jackie Kennedy also had a Toi et Moi engagement ring. It featured a 2.88-carat diamond and a 2.84-carat emerald, both Emerald-cut, set on a band with Baguette diamonds. She eventually had the ring redesigned by Van Cleef & Arpels, and had the Baguettes replaced by a Vine-shaped Marquise flourish.
Toi et Moi Ring Revival
VRAI’s Senior Director of Sales and CX Grace Taylor points out the trajectory of Toi et Moi engagement rings:“Toi et Mois first came back on the scene as fashion jewelry, often featuring two gemstones or a diamond and gemstone, but they’re now increasingly popular as engagement rings,” she says.
Celebrity engagements have certainly facilitated the revival of Toi et Moi engagement rings. When she was engaged to Dalton Gomez, Ariana Grande sported a Toi et Moi ring featuring an Oval diamond and a pearl. Emily Ratajkowski’s engagement ring sports one Pear and one Princess diamond, and she famously got it four months after her wedding in 2018.
Kylie Jenner has an open double-diamond Toi et Moi ring featuring one Pear and one Radiant diamond. In this case, it’s not an engagement ring, but a Mommy and Me ring, given to her by her then-partner Travis Scott. Her daughter Stormi has a matching ring.
What Are the Best Diamond Shapes for a Toi et Moi Ring?
In the case of the Toi et Moi ring, you cannot go wrong with any shapes. Whether they feature corners and straight lines or curves, they will all seamlessly match. In fact, you can also choose how to orient each stone. Elongated shapes can be set both vertically (north-south), horizontally (east-west) or diagonally, fully harnessing the creative potential of asymmetry in jewelry design.

Past Engagement Ring: A Cushion-Cut Halo
When she was engaged (and then married) to Brian Austin Green from 2010 to 2019, Megan Fox used to wear a more traditional engagement ring. It was a double Halo engagement ring featuring a Cushion center diamond and a pavé band. It’s both a maximalist and classic style that, while markedly different from her most recent engagement ring, is still a statement-making piece that is both vintage-inspired and timeless.
